My Journey Contributing to HydePHP: A Beginner’s Perspective on Open Source Development

When I began contributing to HydePHP v2.0, I thought I was simply stepping in to fix a few failing tests. But that small task quickly became one of the most enriching and educational experiences I’ve had in software development so far.

What started out as a debugging job turned into a deep exploration of modern PHP development practices, testing frameworks, and the fascinating world of open source collaboration.


The Challenge: When Tests Tell a Bigger Story

The initial problem was clear: HydePHP had tests failing across several PHP versions. But like many developers know, failing tests are often just the surface—behind them are stories of architectural decisions, dependency intricacies, and evolving language features.

One particular error stood out:

Getting hands-on with Pest (built on PHPUnit) was eye-opening. Its elegant syntax and integration with Mockery for mocking dependencies showed me how mature and expressive PHP testing has become. But with that expressiveness comes complexity—and learning how to mock dependencies the right way took some real architectural digging.

2. Supporting Multiple PHP Versions Is Hard

HydePHP supports PHP 8.2, 8.3, and even 8.4. Keeping tests compatible across these versions meant navigating subtle behavioral changes, deprecated features, and edge cases. I was particularly impressed with how version-specific test skipping was implemented—a smart way to handle compatibility concerns.

3. Static Site Generators Have Their Own Testing World

HydePHP isn’t a traditional app. Testing file generation, Blade and Markdown rendering, asset compilation, and performance benchmarks across platforms made me appreciate how complex static site generators can be behind the scenes.


Debugging in Open Source: Lessons from the Trenches

Each error led me somewhere meaningful. One issue in the DateString constructor helped me understand how HydePHP handles blog metadata. Another mock-related error uncovered how console commands were structured. Every fix led to greater architectural understanding.

PHP has come a long way in enforcing type correctness. A seemingly small issue with passing integers instead of strings became a key learning moment about strict typing and constructor validation.

Pest’s minimalistic syntax, intuitive assertions, and PHPUnit underpinnings make for a powerful and enjoyable testing experience. It’s well-designed and developer-friendly.

This journey has taught me what makes open source projects thrive:

HydePHP’s structure is thoughtfully organized, which makes diving in as a contributor far less intimidating.

I relied heavily on the contribution and testing guides — they made onboarding smooth and accessible.

3. Well-Defined Abstractions

Whether it’s the handling of pages, compilers, or asset processors, HydePHP’s abstractions are intuitive and maintainable.


Final Thoughts

This experience reminded me that the best solutions come from understanding problems at their core—not just applying quick fixes. Every failing test I tackled helped me grow, not just as a developer but as a better contributor to the open source ecosystem.

HydePHP is at the forefront of what’s possible with static site generation in PHP. Its foundation in Laravel, use of modern PHP features, and clean design make it a solid platform to work with.
